What Will Aliens Look Like?

When people speculate about what alien life forms might look like, most experts think it is extremely unlikely that they will be anything like humans. Neil deGrasse Tyson has critiqued Star Trek for its “lack of imagination” by making all their alien species somewhat humanoid in form with only slight cosmetic differences (although that was probably more due to lack of finances rather than lack of imagination). Regardless, I think experts like NDT are wrong. Intelligent aliens, if they exist, will probably look somewhat similar to humans, as Star Trek portrayed.

Best TV (and YT) I Streamed in 2023

1. How to with John Wilson (Season 3)

This continues to be one of the most uniquely brilliant shows on television. It blows my mind how John Wilson is even able to create this show, what his process must be, constantly filming his daily life and somehow editing it all into something cohesive and interesting. There is nothing else like it on TV. It’s almost like an entire show built around synchronicity. He follows serendipity wherever it takes him, around New York City and the entire country. He finds the weirdest people, and like Nathan Fielder, isn’t afraid to get super awkward. But the show is also quite heartfelt at times. Sadly, this is the final season, but I will eagerly watch whatever John Wilson does next.

2. Succession

I wrote about all four seasons of Succession here (and a fictional fifth season here).

Top 10 Movies (At Least 10 Years Old) I Saw in 2019

movies-2019

With 2019 winding down, it’s time for my fourth annual list of the ten best films (at least ten years old) that I watched this past year. As I’ve said before, these lists are always kind of random and arbitrary, based on the movies I happen to choose to watch (or re-watch) that year. I tend to prefer watching something I’ve never seen before over re-watching, though as you’ll see, there were a couple of those this year. Continue reading

Earth is “One Strange Rock”

one-strange-rock

One Strange Rock is a documentary series that aired on National Geographic in the spring of 2018. Hosted by Will Smith and directed/produced by Darren Aronofsky, the show features interviews with eight astronauts, a rare group of humans who have ever seen Earth from off of Earth. With their unique perspective, they can better understand the planet and our place in the universe.

As well as fascinating information, One Strange Rock also includes spectacular visuals: footage of Earth from above (outer space) and below (the strangest far reaches of the planet). It’s a show that every human on Earth should watch to better understand themselves and the planet we all share. It’s certainly a better viewing option than the daily news cycle. Whereas the news aims to invoke fear and outrage and divide people against each other, One Strange Rock is educational and inspiring and aims to bring us all together.
